Why More Information Stops Founders From Acting, and What Replaces It

TLDR: Founders who keep gathering information rarely solve their hardest problems; writer Tim Denning argues that deploying a minimum viable amount of knowledge, acting, and learning from the result beats endless research, and reversible decisions make that shift safe.

Tim Denning argues information is a false god, not a solution

In an essay titled “Your entire life will change when you realize you need more action, not information,” writer Tim Denning makes a blunt claim: “The false god is that gathering more information will solve our biggest problems. That’s clearly a lie.” His target is the quiet belief, common among founders and operators, that one more book, course, or competitor teardown stands between them and a breakthrough.

Denning frames the urge to keep researching as a chemical problem, not an intellectual one. He calls the dopamine that comes from gathering information “a dangerous drug,” a framing he credits to writer Sahil Bloom. The pull is real because consuming feels like progress. It produces the sensation of momentum without the risk of being wrong.

Denning credits years of action, not reading, with the real lessons

The essay’s evidence is personal. Denning recounts that the years after his digital wallet was hacked for 1.2 million dollars taught him more than all his prior reading combined. Between 2014 and 2019, by his own account, he made little progress despite consuming heavily. The lesson reversed only when reality, not a library, became his teacher.
