Cleaning the Air: The Carbon-Removal Innovations That Actually Scale

TLDR: The breakthrough in carbon removal is the market more than the machines; guaranteed demand pulls air-cleaning technology from pilot to plant, and corporate buyers set the pace.

The machines are real, and they start small

Direct air capture (DAC) pulls carbon dioxide straight out of the open sky. The technology works today: Climeworks runs the world’s largest DAC plant, Mammoth, in Iceland, engineered for up to 36,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, roughly an order of magnitude larger than its Orca predecessor.

That figure rewards a second look. Thirty-six thousand tonnes is the largest plant on earth, and it sits at the scale of a rounding error against the tens of billions of tonnes humanity emits each year. The engineering already performs. The economics decide how fast it grows, and that is where the real innovation now lives.

Demand is the innovation that scales

The lever moving carbon removal is a financial instrument: the demand guarantee that sits underneath the filter. An advance market commitment (AMC) guarantees future purchases, which gives young companies the revenue certainty to build. Frontier launched in 2022 as exactly that, founded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, and McKinsey, with a commitment to buy at least one billion dollars of permanent carbon removal between 2022 and 2030.
