The Skills Expire in Four Years. Your Leadership Programme Takes Longer.

En bref : Leadership development still runs on a curriculum clock built for a slower era; responsive leadership now comes from short cycles that pair real decisions with expert feedback and hard measurement.

The development clock now runs slower than the skills it teaches

I have sat in enough steering committees to know the pattern. A company senses it is short on leaders, so it commissions a programme: an eighteen-month curriculum, a competency model, a cohort, a graduation. By the time the first cohort finishes, the market it was designed for has moved, and half the room is being asked to lead through problems their syllabus left out.

The numbers explain why. Forty years ago the half-life of a professional skill sat above ten years; the World Economic Forum now puts it closer to four, and in digital fields such as AI (artificial intelligence) closer to two. Its 2025 Future of Jobs analysis expects nearly 40 per cent of the skills workers use today to change by 2030, with 59 per cent of the workforce needing to reskill or upskill inside the same window.

Put those two clocks side by side and the problem is plain: a development programme that takes two years to run now outlives the shelf life of what it teaches. You are certifying leaders for a world that expires before they get their certificate.
