Le « mode fondateur » fonctionne quand on connaît le produit mieux que quiconque

En bref : Founder mode describes the pull to stay deep in the work as a company scales. It earns its keep when leaders truly know the product, and curdles into vanity when they do not.

Founder mode named a real tension that scaling advice created

I have sat in the meetings where a founder is told, gently and repeatedly, that it is time to grow up. Hire seasoned executives. Give them their function. Retreat to vision and let the org chart carry the load. When Paul Graham published his essay in September 2024, he put a name to the discomfort many of us felt with that script. He argued that two different ways to run a company exist, founder mode and manager mode, and that the standard advice hurries founders into the second before they are ready.

The essay grew out of a talk by Brian Chesky, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Airbnb, at a Y Combinator (YC) event. Graham wrote that its theme was that the conventional wisdom about running larger companies is mistaken. Chesky had scaled Airbnb by the book, delegating heavily, and watched results soften. Graham summarized the standard playbook as hire good people and give them room to do their jobs, then landed the line that made the piece travel. In practice, he wrote, that too often means hire professional fakers and let them drive the company into the ground. Founders, he added, end up feeling gaslit from both sides.

Chesky’s own version is presence inside the product

Chesky has been careful with the label. He said plainly that I never called it founder mode, and that he only described his own experience. That experience deserves to be separated from the slogan. His claim is that great leaders are in the details, and that a chief executive should also serve as the chief product officer. He credits studying how Steve Jobs ran Apple, where closeness to the work sat alongside genuine partnership with the people doing it.
